Labor Migration

Human migration started 10s of million years ago, and since then it has been nothing but rapidly growing. It can be for any reason, Migration can be voluntary (Like distress, looking for better living conditions, etc.) or involuntary, this includes forced displacement (in various forms such as deportation, slave trade, and trafficking in person) and civil conflicts (war refugees, ethnic cleansing), all these resulting in the creation of diasporas. It can also be for environmental disasters like (Climate change).
According to IOM World Report 2022, The current global estimate is that there were around 281 million international migrants in the world in 2020, which equates to 3.6 percent of the global population.
Overall, the estimated number of international migrants has increased over the past five decades. The total estimated 281 million people living in a country other than their countries of birth in 2020 was 128 million more than in 1990 and over three times the estimated number in 1970. this is more than enough to tell us how human movement keeps growing but can also drop.
Every migrant has a right to fair treatment and equal opportunities in each country other than their own home country. A fact sheet drafted by UNHCR on the International Convention on migrant Workers and its Committee, in Part III of the Convention (arts. 8 to 35) grants a fairly broad series of rights to all migrant workers and members of their families, irrespective of their migratory status. Many of these articles specify the application to migrant workers of rights spelled out in the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights5 and the other core human rights treaties.

Do you guys know that even a migrant in any country, contributes to the country’s economic growth? Like, creating a global market, Diversifying local economics, innovations, and entrepreneurship.

There is nothing we can do to stop it, in the end, it is about mobility and free movement of humans. But we can do something about it, Like;
1- Make people aware of the danger they might encounter when taking illegal migration routes, like (Sea, crossing deserts, or using supply tracks for illegal migrations). This can lead them to be trafficked.
2- Ask them to seek advice and support from the right concerned offices of migration for better direction.
3- Ask the governments of each country receiving migrants to treat them with fairness and provide them with social security.
4- Inform migrants to visit the migration office to be legally registered.
5- Provide trauma healing and mentorship support.
6- Remember migrant’s right is a human right.
7- Be their voice when they cannot speak or give them the platform to speak for themselves.

This way, we are not just going to support migrants and counter the risk of losing their lives, but also help prevent it from happening and minimize the rate of victims. Everyone has a role to play in the protection of migrants’ rights, it is our collective contribution that makes the world a better place. Mind us that South Sudan is also a host country to thousands of migrants from the region and beyond.
